TOKYO: 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata could end up the Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ triplets. That’s the latest word from Car and Driver, which claims Toyota has spent some time behind the wheel of the latest fourth-generation Miata. The verdict? So far, so good to the point where Toyota might use the platform under the skin of the next-generation GT86/FR-S and Subaru BRZ.

“If Toyota were to employ the MX-5’s chassis, it would be on the next-generation FT86,” says Car and Driver‘s anonymous source within Toyota. The news is best taken with a grain of salt, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Toyota is at least considering teaming up with Mazda, given a Miata-based Fiat 124 Spider is on the way.
