ISLAMABAD: Summary for the recruitment as replacement of technical and non technical staff of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) has been moved to the Prime Minister for approval.
Out of 15274 existing PSM staff some 2669 highly technical and qualified will retire in coming three years while some 6,000 will retire by 2020. Moreover, there is already a shortfall of 191 staffers because approved number of staff is 15465 whereas PMS is running with 15274 employees.
Pakistan Steel Mills, Karachi is Pakistan’s largest industrial complex, comprising component units numbering more than 20 and is specialized in the production of flat steel products including, billets, slabs, hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils, galvanized sheets/coils/formed sections and corrugated sheets. PSM quality management has resulted in getting of accreditation of ISO 9001, 14001, 17025, SA 8000 and OHSAS 18001.
Well placed source at Ministry of Commerce told this scribe that the concerned organization had moved a request to its parent Ministry of Industries and Production (MoI&P) to seek permission from the competent authority Prime Minister of Pakistan to fill up the upcoming gap in the number of employees to maintain the speed of production.
The source further said that MoI&P responded positively to PSM plea and then prepared a draft of summary and ultimately with the signature of the relevant Minister moved this summary to the Prime Minister for approval.
“The approval of the said summary is likely to be granted in near future because the government is very much focused on improvement in the local industry as well as saving in the foreign exchange” said a source privy to PSM Chief Executive Officer (CEO) PSM General (R) Zaheer Ahmad here.
The source further confirmed that PSM had sought permission of recruitment of 300 technical workers every year from 2014 to 2018.
It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Steel Management is confident that with the arrival of the latest ships the production and capacity utilization CPU will further increase helping to achieve the targets set by Government of Pakistan. PSM’s Current Average Capacity Production Utilization (CAPU) has increased 25% almost of the total capacity of 1.1 million tonnes per annum.
