PARIS: Police in Windsor have charged three former correctional officers with felony conspiracy after investigators say they smuggled cell phones into Bertie Correctional Institution.
Area media outlets report police accuse former officers Ashley Shuler of Aulander, Kimberly Holley of Edenton, and Annelies Loos of Greenville of selling the cell phones to inmates at Bertie Correctional. Police also say an inmate, Kevin Brower, faces the same charge in the case.
Shuler resigned in August, while Holley and Loos resigned in September. Brower is serving a 45-year sentence for two counts of second-degree murder. Officials say he has been moved to another state prison.
Prison officials requested the police investigation, which shows at least three former officers smuggled the cell phones between December 2015 and last September.
