BEIJING: Three robbers were nabbed in Beijing after digging a hole into a warehouse and running off with 240 iPhone 6 handsets, police said yesterday.

The men broke into the Beijing warehouse under the cover of darkness between December 12 and 13 by hollowing-out a 50-centimeter hole in the wall, Shanghai Daily reports. One of the suspects had previously worked as a driver for the logistics company that owned the warehouse and knew his way around the place.

In total, they’d scooped up around 1.4 million yuan worth of Apple products, the spoils of which they later blew on cars, gold and gambling. Police managed to find the suspects in late December by tracking down the stolen phones’ serial numbers.

Apple enthusiasts have gone to great lengths to not purchase their iPhones in mainland China, where they are significantly more costly. Ahead of the phone’s China release in October, customs seized thousands of iPhone 6 handsets flowing into the mainland from Hong Kong via tea boxes and men’s underwear, among other methods (but hopefully not this one).
