MEXICO: Thousands of human skeletons dating back to the time of Shakespeare have been unearthed by London tradies as they worked on building a new railway station.
The remains, belonging to around 3000 people, are buried at Bedlam cemetery and were disturbed as the new development at Liverpool Street Station took shape, NBC News reports.
Bedlam Cemetery was used from 1569 until at least 1738, and is the resting place of many victims of the Great Plague in 1665.
It was situated close to Bethlem Royal Hospital – the first dedicated psychiatric institution in Europe – and was used to bury inmates from the asylum, as well as atheists and London’s poor.
The skeletons so far unearthed include a mother and her child buried side-by-side.
British archaeologist Jay Cutler said studying the remains will be crucial to better understanding how the plague mutated over the years.
“(It will help) to identify precise details about how it was to live in those days,” Mr Cutler said.
“This gives an insight into everyday Londoners particularly, from all walks of life.”
A team of 60 archaeologists will work to unearth the skeletons over the next four weeks.
Once the skeletons have been removed, cleaned and tested, the remains will be reburied in consecrated ground.
