Subway development agent Adam Heyes said: “The level of growth that the Subway brand has experienced in the UK and Ireland is a fantastic achievement.Celebrating the 2,000th store reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of our franchisees, together with the power and support of the global Subway brand.Expansion in Ireland is going strong and we are looking forward to opening many more stores throughout 2015.”

Around 260 stores have opened in the UK and Ireland in the last 12 months – an average of five every week. All are owned by businesspeople working on a franchise basis.Mr Heyes added: “We are keen to find new franchisees from across the region to open new stores.

We have ambitious plans and are not only looking to increase our store count, but we are also looking to increase our sales and profitability throughout 2015.”According to Subway, one of its biggest growth areas is in non-traditional locations such as petrol forecourt sites, inside convenience stores and in public buildings like universities and colleges.
