PARIS: To save the contemporary animals from extinction the DNA of woolly mammoth has been injected into the modern elephants.
There are many types of mammoth as classified by the research team of Harvard University. Different types of DNA have been formed like mammoths with thick fur, extra small fat, smaller ears and a tolerance for cold conditions.
These animals were extinct about 3000 years ago but the mammoth that were frozen, their specimens were found through which the DNA are extracted from.
The closest relative of the woolly mammoth is the Asian elephant, a species that is facing increasing pressure as they interact with human beings. This research was aimed at protecting the species by allowing them to live in colder climates, far away from dense human habitations.
George church, a professor of genetics one of the researchers among the Harvard University said that” if animals finds a place where the human population is less than one third there a chance for survival for them”.
In the grassland of Asia, the mammoths use to live over there in a vast number, and then they disappeared at the end of Pleistocene epoch. The re introduction of these new mammals can have an effect on global climate.
Grasslands would be able to sequester atmospheric carbon produced by vehicles and factories, as well as insulate the ground, slowing melting of permafrost. Biodiversity would also likely increase in regions where mutated elephants roam, as plants and animals take advantage of the new grasslands.
