360 cities in China have low air quality, report

BEIJING: A new report from Greenpeace East Asia, a non-government environmental organization revealed that 90% of the 360 cities in China were not meeting national air quality standards. The report covered the first there months of this year.
According to the report, the most polluted cities were those that are in the interior provinces as well as those that were in the eastern and southern coasts. Despite having low air quality in most of its cities, the report added that this is much better than a year ago. The improvement on air quality was credited to the government’s environmental policies.
Greenpeace East Asia looked at the records of the Ministry of Environmental Protection when it comes to air monitors of the 367 Chinese cities.
Based on their analysis, the most polluted cities in China were Henan, Hubei and Hebei followed by Beijing and Shandong on the fourth and fifth place. These cities are surrounded by heavy industrial facilities that operates by burning coal.
The report added that the three cleanest cities are Linzhi in Tibet, Lijiang in Yunnan province and Altay in Xinjiang- all in the far west of the country.
