ISLAMABAD: A three-member bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Saqib Nisar, has sought written reply from the federal and provincial governments on the construction of Kalabagh Dam.
The bench issuing notices to the Attorney General for Pakistan and the advocate generals of all the provinces directed the stance of their respective governments over this important issue and adjourned the hearing for indefinite period.
Petitioner Adul Latif Khokkar Advocate argued that the construction of Kalabagh Dam is very important in view of the persisting power crisis and the dam is the viable project to overcome the power shortage and water requirement. He prayed the court to give order to the federation and provinces for the construction of the Dam.
Over Lahore High Court’s ruling, the court inquired from the petitioner whether he was aware of the judgment on it. He said that LHC had passed the judgment in favour of construction of Kalabagh Dam.
In January last, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk had dismissed the senior advocate of Supreme Court A K Dogar regarding the matter.
The Kalabagh Dam is a proposed hydroelectric dam on the Indus River at Kalabagh in the Mianwali District. Intensely debated and deemed a necessity since its inception, if constructed the dam would have 3,600 megawatts (4,800,000 hp) of electricity generation capacity.
