DUBAI: Chairman of DMCA, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Customs, and Free Zones Corporation and DP World, said on the side lines of a DMCA coordinating supervisory meeting that the maritime sector now accounts for more than 4% of Dubai’s GDP.
Sulayem also called for the joint efforts of all stakeholders of maritime affairs in the emirate to be increased to support the Dubai Maritime Vision 2030, centered on the development and regulation of the maritime sector and to promote and consolidate Dubai’s position as a leading global maritime hub.
“Dubai Maritime Vision 2030 is of strategic significance as it underpins efforts to improve the maritime sector in Dubai, which in turn, has high level competitive potentials,” said Sulayem. “It also emphasizes how these potentials position Dubai among the leading logistics and maritime centres in the Middle East and North Africa region and in the whole world as well.”
“To achieve the ambitious goals of Dubai Maritime Vision 2030, we should intensify the joint efforts of all stakeholders of maritime affairs in the emirate,” he insisted, pointing out that the local maritime sector represents a fundamental pillar to boost sustainable growth and overall development in the future.
“Maritime Strategy has gained a particular importance as it is the first plan centered on a quantum leap within the maritime sector in Dubai in order to activate its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) and consolidating its role as one of the most prominent value-added economic sectors,” he added.
During the meeting, performance indicators and completion stages of the strategic maritime sector were also reviewed.
The local maritime sector recently made major leaps in terms of its direct contribution to Dubai’s GDP, which amounted to 4.6% or the equivalent of US $3.92-billion (AED 14.4 billion). Maritime operations, maritime engineering, ports and shipping contributed most to the local economy, followed by maritime and recreational services and different offshore support services.
In 2014, more than 75,000 jobs were created within these sectors, especially in maritime operations, maritime engineering and ports, which accounted for 51% and 25% of the employment rates within Dubai’s maritime sector.
Sulayem commended the tireless efforts made by the DMCA team in implementing pilot initiatives which focused on enacting sophisticated and modern regulations and legislation to establish the highest standards in maritime safety as well as developing integrated logistics’ programs.
