$499 iPad Air 2 vs $379 Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9: Display, hardware, camera, battery, OS, price comparison

LONDON: We compare the iPad Air 2 against the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 to see which of these tablet devices is the better purchase.

According to the specs from GSMArena, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX has an 8.9 inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels at 339 ppi pixel density. Its dimensions are 231 x 158 x 7.8 mm, and has two sets of weight variants: 374 grams for the Wi-Fi version, and 384 grams for the 4G version.

Meanwhile, the Apple iPad Air 2 is equipped with a bigger LED-backlit IPS LCD screen at 9.4 inches, which can render a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels at 264 ppi pixel density. The tablet is protected by a scratch proof glass as its dimensions are 240 x 169.5 x 6.1 mm, and it has also two sets of weight variants: 437 grams for the Wi-Fi version, and 444 g for 3G/LTE version.

The Apple iPad Air 2 is equipped with a Triple-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, being powered by a Apple A8X chipset. It has 2GB of RAM, with three variants of internal memory at 16, 64, and 128GB, and its software is the iOS 8.1, being upgraded to the iOS 8.1.3 version.

Meanwhile, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, being paired up with a 2.2 GHz quad-core and Adreno 330. It also has 2GB of RAM with three variants of internal memory at 16, 32, and 64GB, and runs on the Android OS, v4.x (Jelly Bean).

Both tablet devices have 8MP primary cameras, but the iPad Air 2 has a 1.2MP secondary shooter, while the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX has only a 720p secondary camera.

The Amazon tablet has a non-removable Li-Ion battery, which last up to 12 hours, while the Apple iPad Air 2’s battery can last up to 10 hours.

The Apple iPad Air 2 cost around $499, while the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is at $379.
