For those who didn’t know already, Porsche limited the production of the 918 Spyder Hybrid model to only 918 units in a bid to emphasise on the car’s exclusivity.

Interestingly, the German carmaker’s ‘operating profit’ fell this year as it continued to invest in the expansion of its plants in Leipzig and Zuffenhausen and on fuel-efficient technology. This feat will obviously boost Porsche’s earnings, which is of paramount importance to its owner Volkswagen AG’s plans for global expansion and for dethroning its Japanese rival – Toyota.

Porsche’s forecast of a growth in sales to over 200,000 units as compared to 2013’s 162,000 units also includes the numbers for its new Macan compact SUV.

The carmaker’s foray into the SUV segment doesn’t come without its share of environmental concerns; it is now under more pressure than ever to lower emissions. Hence, the expenditure on fuel-efficient technology. Word also has it that the next-gen Porsche 911 may be accompanied by a plug-in hybrid variant.
