ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain, during a meeting with a delegation of the K-Electric, has rejected to support the continuation of 650MW of power supply to the K-Electric company from the national grid.

K-Electric Chairman and country head of the Abraaj Group Tabish Gauhar was leading the delegation. According to sources, the president said that the government could not continue the facility. They said that Ministry of Water and Power had also asked K-Electric to reduce its line losses instead of demanding 650MW from the national grid.

The K-Electric, which supplies power to Karachi and nearby areas, has demanded of the government to continue its package under which it obtains 650MW from the national grid on a daily basis.

The package was withdrawn by the Pakistan People’s Party government in last days of its term and asked the company to put in place its own generation facility to cater to the requirement of the country’s commercial hub.

On the other hand, a K-Electric spokesman has claimed that the president had supported the point of view of the company and had asked the ministry of water and power to continue the supply of 650MW of electricity to the company. He said the issue of land losses came under discussion, “but we have not been refused the facility of 650MW but have been asked to reduce line losses”.

The spokesman said that the five-year contract of running the K-Electric which was awarded to the Abraaj Group, will expire on Jan 15, 2015, claiming that the company had been promised of renewal of its contract.
