ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is considering making it mandatory to print retail prices on essential consumer goods in the upcoming federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27 to improve sales tax collection, according to sources.

Under the proposed plan, items such as tea, powdered milk, vegetable ghee, infant formula, ketchup, and cooking oil would be required to display their retail prices.

Officials said that dozens of commonly used items are expected to be included in the third schedule as part of the new tax measures.

In addition, the budget may include a proposal to double the climate support levy on petroleum products from Rs2.5 per litre to Rs5 per litre, effective from July 1.

The estimated revenue from the climate support levy is projected to exceed Rs90 billion in the next fiscal year.

Sources further indicated that tax exemptions for the former tribal areas may also be withdrawn in the upcoming fiscal budget for 2026–27.
