LAHORE: The 1,410MW Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project is of great importance and it timely completion should be ensured to mitigate worsening energy crisis in the country.
Wapda chairman Zafar Mahmood issued the directives to the project authorities during a visit to the site of under-construction 1,410MW Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project.
The chairman said that Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project was of vital importance in view of the increasing demand of electricity. He stressed that the project, on completion, would not only help mitigate power shortages but also reduce electricity tariff and provide relief to the consumers. He asked the project authorities to accelerate pace of construction work on the project.
The Tarbela Dam General Manager, Project Director and representatives of the consultants and contractors were also present on the occasion.
The Tarbela Dam General Manager and Consultants briefed the Wapda Chairman about the overall progress on the project. It was informed that the project was scheduled to be completed by year 2017 and that the World Bank was providing US $840 million for the project. The Chairman was briefed that with the completion of Tarbela 4th Extension Project, the generation capacity of Tarbela Hydel Power Station will increase from existing 3,478 MW to 4,888MW after installation of three units of 1,410 MW on Tunnel No. 4.
Later, the wapda chairman witnessed intake works at Tunnel 3 and 4 of Tarbela Dam, and took a round of powerhouse site of Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project.
