KARACHI: Ministry of Ports and Shipping has appointed a new board of directors for Port Qasim Authority (PQA) with effect from Friday, a notification said.

PQA board meeting has not being held since May 15, 2013. Port Qasim Authority boards have remained ineffective, resulting in pending of several important issues. Finally, the government has formulated a new board and issued a notification in this regard. According to the law, it is mandatory for the PQA to conduct regular meetings in order to run port matters smoothly.

According to the notification, the new board members included Maqsood Ismail of MD Candy Land, Asif Saeed, Nadeem Abdullah, Cyrus Cowesjee, Nadeem Babar and Zulqarnain.

Official sources said that the new board of directors for the Karachi Port Trust is yet to be formulated. Karachi Port Trust board is also ineffective since December last year, they said. Sources also said that the names of the KPT board have also been finalised and a notification is expected to be issued next week.

Appointment of the board of directors is important as per the law of the ports, as it is mandatory for the board to meet twice in a month in order to resolve, tackle, discuss and take decisions regarding routine matters and also to take important decisions regarding tendering, port operations, projects, allotments development and other matters. Due to this, several issues are pending in the absence of the chairman and the board, the sources added.
