HONG KONG: Smartphone users could enjoy internet speed 50s percent faster on the 4G network next year with a solution born of collaboration between HKT and mainland electronics and communications company Huawei.

Hong Kong’s biggest telecom operator under PCCW, HKT rolled out the world’s first LTE-Advanced 450 Mbps solution, and expects the network to be launched with compatible smartphones by next year.

This, they say, will bring a dramatically improved internet experience for Hong Kong mobile users, enabling faster downloads, enhanced audio and video streaming, and more reliable video conferencing.

HKT and Huawei demonstrated a peak download rate of 435 Mbps at a media briefing yesterday.

The technology allows the firms to achieve LTE- A network speed of 450 Mbps without modifying the current transmission network.

Peter Lam Wing-chap, managing director of HKT Engineering, said with Huawei’s solution HKT will be able to get the most from its frequency resources. “This will enable HKT to provide more network capacity together with a superior and unparalleled user experience.” Lam said.

“We will now work together to plan for the full commercial use of this technology, aiming to further uplift the mobile experience for Hong Kong users,” said David Wang Tao, president of Huawei Wireless Network Product Line.

Wang also hopes the system speed will be up to one gigabyte per second in two years.
