Punjab Excise collects Rs 6.2 billion in 9.5 months

LAHORE: Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has collected Rs 6.2 billion from July to April 15 of current fiscal year 2014-15.

The E&T has recovered 79 percent of the set target for current fiscal year, during nine and half months of the fiscal year 2014-15, which is 30 percent more than last year’s collection of the same period.

The region A, B and C of the Lahore division earned revenue which is 80 percent more than the set target. Region B is leading in Lahore with recovery of Rs 1.8 billion in the wake of property tax during said period.

Collection of property tax is satisfactory in first six months of the fiscal year but the collection of other taxes is not up to the mark. In this regard, Secretary Excise has directed the officers to take all necessary steps to meet their targets. During directors conference Secretary has strictly ordered the officers to improve their recoveries as only two months are left in this fiscal year.

Excise property tax wing sealed thousands of properties during last two months specially after starting of crackdown from 1st of March. Number of well known buildings including Expo Centre Johar Town, Lahore Development Authority Parking Plaza and other shopping malls and houses were sealed during this crackdown.

There were 160,000 defaulters in Lahore who were failed to pay their property tax till end of December. After sending notices with two percent fine, number of tax defaulters paid their taxes but there are still many defaulters those remained fail to pay their taxes.

Still there are thousands of property tax defaulters in Lahore. Number of famous cases regarding property tax is in court like Pakistan Cricket Board.
