MASCOW: In 2014 Russia imported about 5,000 tonnes of turkey meat, according to the preliminary information from Russian analysts, which means that the country has almost abandoned large-scale import of this type of meat.

As reported by the analytical agency Russian Reach Consulting (RRC), Russia reduced its import of this type of meat by 41% from 20,000 tonnes in 2012 to only 11,800 tonnes in 2013.

The official statistics also indicated that in the first half of 2014 Russia imported 3,800 tonnes of turkey meat. In the second half of 2014 the import has virtually stopped, due to the embargo imposed by Russian authorities on August 7 and the devaluation of the Russian rouble.

As reported by the RRC, during the period 2010-2013 the supply of turkey meat to Russia had dropped considerably. Frozen carcasses and offal fell the most- in 2013 the share of this group was 92% of total import of turkey.

The largest supplier of turkey meat to Russia is Brazil. In 2013, it supplied 6,000 tonnes turkey meat or more than half of all supplies. Previously, the largest supplier was France but in recent years it also sharply decreased it supply.
