SYDNEY: YouTube reveals Minecraft videos have been watched more than any other game in the sites 10 year history. Everywhere it goes whether its consoles, PC, or mobile platforms Minecraft is an unstoppable force still commanding huge revenue numbers years after its original release.
The pixelated block builder has raked in countless awards and topped an unbelievable number of lists. The unassuming title simply keeps growing pushing the limits of our imagination by allowing people unleash their craziest ideas. Ideas they often like to share on social media with gifs and especially with videos which has landed the block builder on the top of yet another list.
Today YouTube put out a list of the top 10 most streamed video games and unsurprisingly Minecraft was sitting proudly on top of the heap. The list is a celebration of YouTube’s 10th anniversary focused on the most popular games since the site started in 2005. According to YouTube’s Global Head of Gaming Content Ryan Wyatt “there are over 42 million Minecraft videos on YouTube today” Going on to say that “It’s crazy because `Minecraft’ is also the second most searched term on YouTube. It’s a testament to (Developer) Mojang understanding the marketing capacity and power of our content creators.”
It was that same understanding marketing capacity that caught the attention of Microsoft who bought Minecraft from creator Markus “Notch” Persson for $2.5 billion last year. Also making it among the most, if not the most, financially successful games in history five years after its original release. Its popularity only seems to grow with every platform and site that it comes to dominate, including the live game streaming service Twitch. There Minecraft enjoys a regular spot among the top streamed games helping streamers to cash in on a little bit of that brick building power.
The other games on YouTubes top 1o most streamed games list oddly enough have some of the same open world creative possibilities as Minecraft including Grand Theft Auto from Rockstar Games. Few of the games on YouTube’s list will come as a surprise to gamers, all of them are among the most popular and powerful titles in the industry:
- Minecraft
- Grand Theft Auto
- League of Legends
- Call of Duty

- Garry’s Mod
