LAHORE: Accused Abdul Basit, who was arrested by the customs authorities at the Lahore airport for attempting to smuggle 15 kilograms of gold and foreign currency worth Rs 33.2 million, was to be presented before the Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling  on  Wednesday, as his physical remand ended.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation could not present him because lawyers boycotted the court proceedings countrywide against the Daska incident where two lawyers were killed during a clash with local police.

Abdul Basit was nabbed by Model Customs Collectorate Preventive, and the court on Monday extended his physical remand for a day. However, due to a strike by the legal fraternity following the Daska incident, the case could not be heard.

Earlier, he was on a four-day physical remand that ended on Monday, and Customs Intelligence got the remand extended for a day. The investigation officer argued in the court on Monday that during the investigations, a number of developments had been made, and sought more time for investigations.
