MUMBAI: With the arrest of two persons—Amit Vasa from Mira Road and Amit Padiyaar from Borivli, the city crime branch has solved the Lamington Road con case wherein goods worth Rs 6.30 lakh were taken away from a mobile shop by a gang posing as Customs officials.

The police are now looking for the two accused’s accomplices who are in possession of the booty.

Seven persons posing as Customs officials barged into Ramesh Bafna’s mobile shop on D B Marg and threatened him. They co-erced him into bringing goods worth Rs 6.30 lakh in a bag and accompanying them to a nearby Customs office in their car. They then drove him to an isolated place in Mankhurd, where they abandoned him and fled. When Bafna opened his bag, he realized that the goods were gone and he had been duped.

Bafna lodged a complaint with D B Marg police. The crime branch too started parallel investigations and with the help of CCTV footage, arrested Vasa and Padiyaar, said additional commissioner KMM Prasanna.

The accused have disclosed the name of one of their associates, Sameer Sayyed from Kausa, Mumbra, who, they said, had arranged for the vehicle and brought in the other accomplices. The car used by the accused has been traced. Its driver, Amit Yeole from Ghatkopar, has admitted to having taken the accused to Lamington Road. He said that his cousin, Umesh Botawade, who too has been picked up from Nerul, had asked him for a ride. The police are verifying the roles of Yeole and Botawade.
