SAN FRANCISCO: Operators of Peru’s major port in Callao said it could take between a week and 10 days to clear the terminal’s cargo backlog, which built up during the recent strike.
APM Terminals (APMT), the operators, said grain and fertilizer imports had been the worst affected by the labour dispute which lasted three weeks and ended on Friday June 5.
Truck drivers, some of whom APMT says were intimidated by striking dockworkers, had been staying away but now they are expected to head back to the port in full force, helping to unclog things.
The industrial action came to a negotiated settlement last Friday, helped especially when the SUTRAMPORPC union and APMT agreed to an amended deployment of a contentious electronic staff rostering system. APMT wants to have the system to help it in its efforts to prevent drug sale and use on the docks.
The operator said on Thursday that it had would reinstate 130 union workers who had been fired during the strike after testing positive to drugs, among other reasons. Those workers could return provided they let disciplinary letters be placed in their disciplinary files.
