Authorities responded to woods off State Route 30 in southern Malone after a camper called 911 shortly after discovering his vehicle had been shot.

Gov. Cuomo said the man reported hearing a noise and believing his tire had gone flat, he stopped and got out of the vehicle. Seeing all of his tires intact, he proceeded to get back in his vehicle and drove to a campsite.

Once at the campsite, the driver realized his vehicle had been shot and contacted authorities.

State police responded to the area and found a cabin. When inspecting the building they smelled gunpowder, and a tactical team was flown in by helicopter.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection tactical unit located Matt and ordered him to put his hands in the air, when he did not comply, he was shot.

New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico confirmed during the briefing that Matt had not fired any shots, but reminded all in attendance of his violent past.

Gov. Cuomo stated that although Sweat was not spotted with Matt, there’s no reason to believe they were not together.
