BANGKOK: A suspected smuggler was arrested and more than 200 kilogrammes of marijuana seized on the banks of the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom’s Muang district, a navy security force commander said here the other day.
Pattaporn Thavorn, 21, a native of Ubon Ratchathani, was apprehended late Monday and taken to a press conference at the military base in Nakhon Phanom on Tuesday.
Six sacks containing 233 bars of compressed ganja, each weighing a kilogramme, and a long-tailed boat were seized from the suspect.
Mr Pattaporn and three accomplices were on board the boat to allegedly transport the drugs to an area near a Puta spirit shrine in tambon Khamtao when a team of military personnel spotted them and asked search the boat. The three other alleged smugglers managed to escape.
After the arrest, the suspect was asked to undergo a urine test for illicit drugs and tested positive for drug use, police said.
Authorities said the seized drugs were worth about 5 million baht.
