Northern Ireland remains worst place in UK for new businesses

DUBLIN: In the first six months of 2015, 3,827 companies were set up according to data from Companies House, the UK’s official registrar of businesses.

Northern Ireland is the worst place in the UK for new businesses so far this year.

In the first six months of 2015, 3,827 companies were set up according to data from Companies House, the UK’s official registrar of businesses.

This is the equivalent of 20.3 businesses for every 10,000 people living in the country – less than half the UK average of 48.9 per 10,000.

Across the UK as a whole, just over 316,000 businesses have registered with Companies House in the first half of 2015 at a rate of 48.9 per 10,000 people.

England had more business starts per head than any of the other three UK nations with 52.8 per 10,000 people and 40.4 per 10,000 once London is excluded.

Scotland was the next most likely place for businesses to set up shop with 33.1 per 10,000 starting between January and June this year while in Wales it was 25.6 per 10,000.

Belfast was the most likely place in Northern Ireland for businesses to spring up with 1,049 starting there in the first six months of the year at a rate of 3.1. per head.

Newtownabbey was the worst in Northern Ireland and the second worst in the UK for new businesses with just 22 businesses starting at 12.9 per head.
