BANGKOK: Travelers can now double their shopping budget as customs has increased the duty free limit for personal belongings brought into the country to THB20,000.

The new rule was made to suit the current situation of the Thai baht and increase flexibility for Thai tourists returning from overseas, as well as foreign visitors bringing personal belongings with them, according to Customs Director Somchai Sujjapongse.

The increase was made effective Friday. The new regulation may see more people declare their goods instead of the norm which is to just walk past Suvarnabhumi Airport customs without declaring our bundle of designer purses that friends and family forced us to buy.

Somchai said the increase of the tax-free personal belongings was made to match the limit of goods one passenger is allowed to buy at airport duty-free shops.

The rule doesn’t apply to cigarettes or liquor. Cigarettes or cigars brought in by travellers will remain exempt at up to 200 cigarettes or not more than a combined weight of 250 grams.
