ISLAMABAD: The country’s power regulatory authority has accused K-Electric of violating agreement and licence conditions.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has also decided to initiate regulatory proceedings against the utility after issuing a show-cause notice next week.

According to a Nepra spokesperson, a fine of up to Rs100 million or appointing an administrator for the takeover of the company could be possible.

The spokesperson claimed that violations of all agreements and licence conditions, relating to power generation and transmission and distribution, by the KE had been established. Despite taking Rs13 billion from the government at the time of privatisation to deliver certain things, the KE did not implement the agreement.

The spokesperson said the duration of loadshedding in Karachi during Ramazan had extended from 12 to 96 hours at a stretch, contrary to the utility’s claims of eight to 10 hours of loadshedding.
