CALIFORNIA: The Nevada City Council aims to discuss potentially providing city funds for a 2016 Amgen Tour of California bid, or other future citywide events. During a city council meeting last week, City Manager Mark Prestwich said he plans to place the discussion item on the council’s Aug. 26 agenda
The group has raised more than $5,000 since Aug. 3 through their online Go Fund Me campaign, and had raised around $11,000 prior to that. Strawser, who is also the owner of Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Shop, helped raise the $50,000 necessary to bring the race to the area this year, and in the previous 2010 and 2011 tours..
In July, council members discussed and voted on a motion to explore city funds in order to help payback a more than $15,000 debt acquired by council member Duane Strawser in his efforts to bring the 2015 Amgen Tour of California cycling race to Nevada City. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce has recently reported closing the gap on the $15,000 Amgen debt, and is still currently raising funds for a possible 2016 tour bid.
