SANTA TERESA: U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations officers working at the Santa Teresa port of entry made five marijuana seizures since September 2. CBP officers confiscated a total of 704 pounds of marijuana in those cases including 209 pounds in a seizure.
“CBP officers remain vigilant and their hard work is resulting in this enforcement activity,” said Ray Provencio, CBP Santa Teresa Port Director. “Every day CBP officers are doing their part to keep our nation safe and secure.”
The largest of the five seizures occurred Tuesday evening when a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup arrived at the port from Mexico. A CBP officer at the primary inspection station selected the vehicle for a secondary exam. CBP drug sniffing dog “Bingo” searched the vehicle and alerted to the ceiling area of a camper shell. CBP officers scanned the camper shell with a “Buster” density meter and received high readings consistent with hidden contraband.
CBP officers drilled the ceiling area and recovered a green substance which tested positive for marijuana. CBP officers removed a total of 81 marijuana-filled bundles from the compartment. The drugs weighed 209 pounds and have an estimated street value of $167,200.
CBP officers arrested the driver, 20-year-old Juan Janzen, a Canadian citizen residing in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. He was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations agents to face charges associated with the failed smuggling attempt.
