ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Water and Power has unanimously agreed that national organisations should not be privatised and criticised the government over proposed privatisation of power distribution companies (Discos).
The body observed that with the privatisation of distribution companies, there would be a monopoly of companies which will damage public interest, adding that it would be another exercise, like privatisation of PTCL.
The committee strongly recommended that if privatisation is the government policy then they must start with non-profitable organisations. The committee further emphasised that government may ensure administrative control by keeping 51 percent shares and handing over 49 percent share to private sector.
MNAs Malik Ihtebar Khan, Rana Afzal Hussain Pir Aslam Bodla, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Nawab Yousaf Talpur, Ria Hasan Nawaz, Muhammad Gohar Shah, Syed Ayaz Ali and Dr GG Jamal attended, while Arshad Khan Leghari chaired the meeting.
