TEHRAN: Azerbaijan’s and Iran’s railway lines will be connected by the end of 2016, Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayeen said while speaking about results of Astara-Astara meeting on October 9-10.
The diplomat said for this purpose, 7 km of railway line should be constructed in Azerbaijan, 2 km in Iran: “Azerbaijan announced it will start the processes within ten days. Moreover, a bridge should be built over the River Astara. An agreement on construction of this bridge has been come. Both countries are doors to Asia and Europe and intend to become transit and cargo transportation centre. At the same time, a customs terminal with the potential of 4 mln tonnes will be constructed”.
Touching upon the construction of Rasht-Astara railway, the ambassador said the works have not commenced yet: “Currently, negotiations are being conducted with China and Russia for allocation of financial resources. Length of this railway will make 170 km. Consequently, the railway line between Persian Gulf and Russia will be connected”.
