Finance Minister Dar tasks auditors to ascertain causes of electricity over-billing

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar here the other day tasked the auditors to ascertain clearly why over-billing had actually occurred in the previous months.

A meeting of the Special Committee of the Cabinet on Power Matters was held here the other day under chairmanship of Ishaq Dar. They were asked to revert to the committee with their findings as soon as possible so that a consolidated report could be prepared and presented before the cabinet. Earlier, the committee received a detailed briefing from the team of auditors about their report on the issue of overbilling. The team answered a number of queries from members of the committee.

The Committee also had a detailed review of the implementation of Cabinet’s decision regarding adjustment of excess billing.  Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on this occasion said that in the last fourteen months, the government had been able to considerably bring down the subsidy for the power sector and budgeted it at Rs 180 billion. The amount saved had been diverted for development works, especially energy sector, the minister added. Minister for Water & Power, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, Minister for Commerce, Khurram Dastgir Khan and  Minster for Textile Industry, Abbas Khan Afridi attended the meeting.
