KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC)  on Thursday gave the Iqra University time to place on record certain documents, substantiating its claims of busway system being used for educational purposes for claiming duty and tax exemption on its import.

Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, who headed a division bench, was hearing the petition filed by M/s Iqra University against Pakistan Customs for not giving duty and tax relief on import of busway system.

The petitioner’s counsel submitted that the institution had imported busway system for research purposes, however, the customs authorities levied heavy duty and tax on its import. He added the petitioner is an educational institution and granted exemption from tax under the tax laws for being a non-government organization imparting education.

He, therefore, argued that it is entitled to tax, duty exemption on import of material that would be used for educational purposes. The counsel pleaded to the court to direct the authorities to apply PCT 9915, granting tax/duty exemption on import of scientific material and release the consignment.
