Customs court extends judicial remand of 4 suspects in gold smuggling case

LAHORE: The Customs Court sent four accused to jail on judicial remand on Monday.

According to details, during the hearing of the case in which four accused were nominated, the Customs authorities sought more time from the court to investigate the case as more suspects were involved in smuggling of heavy quantity of gold and currency to the Gulf States.

After arguments, the customs court ordered judicial trial of the suspects, including Toufeeq Butt, and sent them to jail on a 14-day judicial remand. Earlier, the Special Federal Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling had issued a 14-day judicial remand of Toufeeq Butt.

It is pertinent to mention here that a suspect, Abdul Basit, was arrested by Customs authorities at Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore when he was attempting to smuggle 10 kilograms gold worth Rs 90 million to a Gulf state.
