GEORGE TOWN: Senior Customs Officer of the Year in 2014 Philip West has been promoted to Assistant Collector of Customs.
Over 24 years in the department, Mr West has proven his worth in a number of areas, including continually training juniors as a certified instructor.
Equally aware of the need to keep up his education, Mr West’s latest accomplishment was the completion of a certificate course in leadership and management.
Over the years, he also successfully completed other professional development including middle management training, K-9 drug detection, advanced narcotic interdiction training, firearms training, and tactical self defence.
He has also completed training in goods scanning safety and operation, something that has benefitted the container scanning operation, a unit that he presently heads.
In fact, Mr West was among the officers instrumental in acquiring the scanning equipment that prescreens containers for contraband including firearms and ammunition.
Known in the service for providing strong support to teammates and juniors, Mr West strongly believes officers should lead by example.His staff have rewarded his efforts with their wholehearted support.
He has some hard-won advice for young Caymanians looking to serve the country.
