LAREDO: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo seized $414,000 worth of marijuana in a shipment of fresh produce.
The seizure happened Dec. 29, when a CBP officer referred a tractor-trailer hauling a commercial shipment of broccoli for a non-intrusive inspection.
A canine and non-intrusive inspection by CBP officers resulted in the discovery of 1,852 packages containing 2,072 pounds of marijuana hidden within the shipment, authorities said.
“This seizure was an excellent interception from our CBP officers,” Laredo Port of Entry Director Gregory Alvarez said. “The officer’s attention to detail and utilization of technology led to the discovery of this unique concealment method.”
CBP officers seized the narcotics and turned the case over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations special agents for further investigation.
