SHC allows Appraisement Collectorate to collect Rs 54.2m taxes in Suzuki case

KARACHI: The Appraisement Collectorate has collected Rs 54.2 million duty and taxes after a divisional bench of Sindh High Court passed an order in its favour in special customs appeals filed by Pak Suzuki Company.

According to details, the case is about an order-in-original in import of a CKD parts by the car company. The Appraisement Intelligence Branch of the collectorate pointed out that the consignment comprised four additional parts that were liable to duty and taxes worth Rs 54.27 million.

The appellant approached the Custom Appellate Tribunal which decided the case in the favour of the collectorate in 2004. The appellant then moved the Sindh High Court which granted a stay order in favour of the appellant on March 10, 2004 subject to the payment of duty and taxes before the court nazir in the form of bank guarantee.

The case was disposed off in the favour of Appraisement Collectorate and the court reserved the judgement on 28 October. The Appraisement Collectorate filed an application in the SHC for the release of the bank guarantee deposited by the appellant which was allowed and the collectorate collected the due duty and taxes in entirety.
