KARACHI: Auto spare parts importers have urged the government to impose 15per cent flat duty on all imported auto spare parts.
Former Pakistan Auto Spare Parts Importers and Dealers Association chairman Naeem Ahmed, in a statement, demanded the flat duty on all imported auto spare parts to stop corruption, under invoicing and smuggling, and to ensure availability of low priced spare parts.
He said under the new auto policy, the govt had announced cut in duties, which he said was not sufficient for the growth of the auto sector. “Before the announcement of the policy, total duties on imported auto spare parts amounted to 90pc,” he added.
Naeem said that overall the new policy was good and would provide more access to low priced, used imported vehicles, along with expected cut in the prices of vehicles being manufactured or assembled in Pakistan.
He emphasised the government should focus on attracting European investors to the auto sector by offering incentives. “The policies should be for industrialisation instead of for the growth of consumers’ sector only,” he added.
