In a bid to accelerate pace of reforms in different departments and organisations, the Finance Division has established a special monitoring cell which would directly report to the Finance Minister. “Special focus of this cell will be to monitor the performance of FBR, Finance Division, Statistics Division and Economic Affairs’ Division (EAD) from both the reforms as well as performance from expenditure side,” a well placed source at FBR told this scribe here the other day.

The source said that government decided to appoint officials to run the affairs of the special cell from FBR as well as from other departments. “First badge of officers has been selected and list of those officials sent to their parent departments,” the source said, adding that FBR had approved appointment of Suleman Yaqub Khan so far and would approve the rest of selected officers next week.  “Main objective behind the establishment of monitoring cell is to monitor the performance of key financial and administrative departments so that set targets of financial improvement set by the government can be achieved in near future” the source said adding that this effort by the Finance Division spoke the volume of seriousness of the government for to uplift country financially,” the source added

Moreover, the source said that selection of Suleman Yaqub Khan was also necessary to monitor the performance of FBR in the backlash of Tax Reforms Commission (TRC) which had been given four months time limit for the preparation of its recommendations which seemed very difficult from the current pace of its working. “FBR wants to reforms in Customs, Taxation as well as existing treaties on taxation with other countries therefore oversight of monitoring cell will definitely be helpful in the implementation of agenda of reforms driven by the government,” the source further said.

To a query about inclusion of Statistics Division in the purview of the said cell, the source explained that Statistics Division was vitally important government department because entire planning of the government depended on the data and statistics collected by this division, therefore, this division had also been placed under special monitoring of the aforesaid cell.
