Customs Court extends judicial remand of currency smuggling suspect

LAHORE: The Special Court of Customs, Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has extended the judicial remand of a suspect who was arrested from Lahore airport while making an attempt to smuggle foreign currency to Bahrain.

Earlier, he was in jail on judicial remand after completion of interrogation during physical remand of five days.

The suspect, Tahir Bharwana son of Sikandar Hayat Bharwana, was intercepted by the customs officials at Lahore airport and had recovered $7,135 and 16,000 Bahraini dinars.

The estimated value of the foreign currency is equal to Rs 5.2 million, which is illegal to carry while travelling abroad.

Therefore, the customs team arrested the accused and registered a case against him under Section 2 (s), 16, 139, 156, (17), 87 (70), and 178 of Customs Act, 1969.
