ISLAMABAD: The Model Customs Collectorate has confiscated smuggled cloth of different types worth Rs 194,000 during an action on GT Road, Rawalpindi.
Talking to Customs Today, Deputy Collector Headquarters Shahid Jan said that the collectorate has achieved significant progress against smuggling. The anti-smuggling drive has tightened noose around the smugglers in the region that it was saving revenue for the country.
The deputy collector said that anti-smuggling staff following credible information intercepted a car at Islamabad entry point, Rawalpindi for checking. The officials while checking the vehicle recovered a quantity of the cloth including 170 kilogram of ladies polyester cloth worth Rs 89,250, 146kg sofa cloth worth Rs 76,650 and 56kg nylon fabric valued at Rs 28,518.
Following the recovery of cloth, the official asked the persons travelling in the said vehicle to show documents regarding the legal import of the cloth but they remained fail to do the same; therefore, the officials confiscated the items under the Customs Act, 1969.
Deputy Collector Shahid said that FIR has been lodged against the accused persons, while further investigation is underway.
The Jan said elimination of smuggling, which is causing loss of billions of dollars to the national exchequer, could help reduce dependence on debts; adding that the customs was trying its level best to overcome the smuggling trends.
