KARACHI: The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation, Quetta, foiled two smuggling attempts in region and seized drugs, air conditioners and charging fans worth Rs 5 million.
Following information regarding the storage of drugs in city, Customs Intelligence deputy director formed a team comprising Inspector Safdar Ahmad Khan, Sohail Khan and Adnan Rameez to establish check post in order to bust the smuggling attempts.
The officials intercepted a passenger bus for checking, which led to the recovery of 200 kilogram of charas concealed in hidden boxes of the bus. The recovered drug was seized, besides arresting two accused persons. It was revealed the arrested persons are members of a drug cartel, Lasi. The law enforcement agencies have already five members of the group during different actions.
The Customs Intelligence registered cases against them and kicked off investigation to trace their accomplices and warehouses in Quetta city.
During another action, the Customs Intelligence staff conducted raid near Panjgor and intercepted a truck for checking. The officials recovered more than 30 pieces of imported air conditioners and 100 charging fans.
The officials asked driver of the vehicle to show documents regarding the legal import of the items but he could not produce the same; therefore, the recovered items along with truck were impounded under the customs laws. During the raid, the officials arrested two accused persons.
He further added that the customs officials were working round the clock to capture the non-duty paid goods and vehicle being smuggled into or via Quetta. The menace of smuggling was not only affecting the national economy of the country negatively but also disturbing local businesses.
