KARACHI: Additional Collector Customs Preventive Airport Syed Asad Raza Rizvi has said that the customs officials have foiled an attempt to smuggle electronic items worth Rs 15 million.
Addressing a press conference, the Additional Collector Customs Preventive said that the customs staff received information through Deputy Collector Preventive , JIAP, Amjad Laghari that a huge quantity of foreign origin contraband goods would be smuggled into the county through Emirates Airlines Flight No EK610 on July 12 under the guise of personnel baggage.
Additional Collector Syed Asad Raza Rizvi said that the customs staff was deployed to keep strict vigilance on the movement and clearance of the passengers arriving by the said flight. The flight no EK610 arrived at about 02:10 hours and the passengers were cleared under strict watch.
In the meantime, two passengers who were identified as Aslam Mengrani and Muhammad Jawad, were checked at scanning machine. Their baggage consisted of seven packages which indicated the presence of various commercial goods. Therefore, all the packages were examined which led to the recovery of expensive mobile phones, medicines, memory cards, USBs, tabs, mac books, pads, laptops, cameras, mobile projectors, in a huge quantity, said the additional collector.
He further stated that the value of goods according to customs valuation is Rs55, 52,144, the market value is more than Rs15 million. The duty taxes involved are more than Rs3 million on the recovered goods.
All the offended goods were seized along with containers thereof and travelling documents of both the passenger and they were arrested for violating Customs Act 1969,
The court has handed over the culprits to the officers of the customs for further investigation after the FIR was lodged against the offenders.
