KARACHI: The Gwadar Customs authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of gold in Jeewani sea area, while during another operation the Customs authorities seized a huge quantity of Indian gutkha and tea.
Sources told Customs Today that Collector Customs Gwadar Saeed Akram received information that some smugglers are planning to smuggle goods through open sea route of Jeewani. He directed Director Customs Intelligence to constitute a team to foil these smuggling bids. A customs team, which included Inspectors Kashif Hassan, Malik Tahir, Sohail Khan and others, started patrolling in the open sea area and intercepted a ferry. During the checking of the ferry, the Customs team recovered 30 biscuits of gold while some other gold items were found hidden in secret parts of the ferry. The Customs team seized the gold and arrested all the four persons who were board on the ferry. The market value of the seized gold is Rs 2 million.
During another crackdown customs team recovered huge quantity of Indian origin gutkha and tea. Sources said that Gwadar customs authorities received information that some smugglers are planning to smuggle above mentioned goods. He immediately formed a team under the supervision of deputy collector.
The customs team intercepted a Mazda truck and during checking recovered 100 tins full of Indian gutkha and 50 sacks of Indian origin tea. Customs team seized the goods and arrested three persons who were board on the truck besides registering a case of smuggling against them. Sources said that during initial interrogations the accused persons disclosed that they were going to deliver these goods to some other persons. The market value of seized goods is Rs7 million.
It is necessary to mention here that customs authorities speed up their efforts to curb smuggling in open sea and they are getting fruitful results of their anti smuggling campaign.
