Chairman Customs Appellate Tribunal to resume hearing of cases from mid August

ISLAMABAD: Customs Appellate Tribunal Chairman Justice (r) Manzoor Hussain will resume cases’ hearings from mid of August.

The newly appointed Customs Appellate Tribunal Chairman, Manzoor Hussain, had not scheduled the hearing immediately after joining the office on Tuesday owing to ongoing summer vacation at courts and tribunals.

However, in the meantime, the tribunal was bearing burden of unheard cases which have been pending since a couple of months due to vacant office of the chairman.

Officials from tribunal said that chairman had chaired a meeting of tribunal officers and indicated to resume hearing by mid of next month. They also added that other benches would also resume hearings on same days.

Newly appointed chairman of the tribunal held a meeting with staffers couple of days ago taking information about tribunal’s affairs.

Ministry of Law and Justice had issued notification of appointment of Justice (r) Manzoor Hussain as chairman of Customs Appellate Tribunal on Wednesday. Notification of appointing Justice (r) Manzoor Hussain as chairman of Customs Appellate Tribunal was issued following the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif approved the summary report of employing Hussain as chairman of Tribunal.

The notification further stated: “The government appoints Mr Justice (retd) Maznoor Hussain as judicial Member-cum-Chairman, Customs Appellate Tribunal, Bench-I, Islamabad on contract basis on standard terms and conditions for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, with effect from the date of assumption of charge”.

Justice (r) Manzoor Malik had earlier served as Justice of Peshawar High Court. He got retired from provincial apex court during May, 2015. Justice Hussain retired after serving at the High Court for nearly 25 months.
