Customs Courts remands three suspects on smuggling charges

KARACHI: Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling acting Judge Arshad Noor Khan on Monday sent three suspects, Mohammad Iqbal, Kulsoom and Saima Fazal, on a seven-day physical remand in a gold and currency smuggling case.

The investigating officer (IO) produced three accused, including two women before the Customs Court, however, he was informed that Custom Court judge Faiz Rasool Rashdi was on leave; therefore, the accused persons were produced before the acting judge.

During the hearing, the officer informed the court that on a credible information, passengers, who were travelling in a group from Karachi to Dubai by Emirates Airlines Flight No EK -605, were intercepted at customs counter for examination of their baggage and they were asked to declare whether they were carrying any contraband goods like gold, currency, etc on which they all replied in negative.

However, during the examination, the customs authorities found 2.35 kilogram of pure gold bangles valued at Rs 10.476 million, Saudi Riyal 99,500 and UAE Dirham 13000 worth Rs 1.3618 million.

The officer informed the court that after completing all legal formalities, accused persons were arrested and case no p-08/2016 – JIAP (Departure) was registered in violation of Section 2 (5), 16 & 178 of the Customs Act, 1969, punishable under Section (8) of 89 of Section 156 (i) ibid.
