Spain’s fruit imports from Morrocco increase 26%

MADRID: Spain recorded a 26 per cent increase in imports of fresh fruit and vegetables from Morocco in the first three months of 2016, totaling 133,891 tonnes, according to a report from Agri Maroc.

At EU level, imports of fresh fruit and vegetables from Morocco also rose significantly during the first term, by 13 per cent to 482,000 tonnes. The period between January and March saw a marked increase in Spanish imports of Moroccan tomatoes, which grew by 47 per cent to 20,206 tonnes.

Other Moroccan products experiencing sizeable increases to Spin included courgettes (up 175 per cent to 9,517 tonnes) and peppers (up 23 per cent to 26,500 tonnes). However, the leading Moroccan vegetable export to Spain remains green beans, which grew by 14 per cent to 58,057 in the first three months of 2016.
