Sri Lankan Customs retrieve six containers of sub-standard tea

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Customs has successfully retrieved six containers of sub-standard tea being transported by ship en-route to Iraq. Chief assistant Prevention Officer of Sri Lanka Customs, Sudath de Silva said that each container had a 18,000 kilogramme stock of refuse tea.

Details regarding the six containers came to light following investigations conducted by Customs, after being tipped off by the Police STF, which discovered two such containers at the Port premises.

Customs said that the ship carrying the container left the Colombo Port and is en-route to Iraq via Dubai and that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the scam.

Sudath de Silva said that two other suspects who aided in the scam are at large.Four other containers with stocks of refuse tea were discovered by the Customs at the port premises as well.
