Collector Akhtar summons suspects in cloth, tea smuggling case

ISLAMABAD: Customs Adjudication Collector Dr Akhtar Hussain has issued show cause notice to M/s Aqeel & Brothers Goods Forwarding Agency and Iftikhar Ahmad, owner of a truck, in seized cloth, tea and perfumes smuggling case.

The collector directed the accused persons to file their reply within 14 days.

As per details, a team of Customs Intelligence following credible information established check post on Islamabad-Lahore GT Road and intercepted a truck bearing Registration No LES-15-7848 for checking. The officials recovered 1425 kilogramme of ladies fabric, 295kg Boski cloth, 102kg silk fabric, 375kg tea and a huge quantity of perfumers from the vehicle.

Later, the customs team asked Iftikhar Ahmad to show documents regarding legal import of the said items, but he could not produce the same. Therefore, the officials seized the items, besides impounding the truck under customs laws and arrested Iftikhar Ahmad.

The accused was presented before the Customs Court seeking his remand; however, the court approved 14-day remand.

During interrogation, it was revealed that the owner of seized goods is Aqeel Ahmad, who is also running a goods forwarding agency, which is used for supplying the items on order.

Meanwhile, Customs Adjudication Collector Dr Akhtar Hussain sent notices to both accused persons on the violations of various sections of Customs Act, 1969 and also sought detail of seized items from the customs officials.

The collector also directed them to appear before the authority in person or through his accredited representative before the undersigned at the office.

The authority will decide the case keeping in view the available evidence if the suspects fail to attend the hearing of the case.
